Hi World!
Several nontraditional methods can help improve your overall health and make it easier to get through bone cancer treatment.
Many people facing cancer look to complementary and alternative medicine to help fight their disease and manage side effects of traditional cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation.
Bone Cancer: Complementary and Alternative Medicine
Alternative medicine practices come from many different countries and some have been used for thousands of years to treat a variety of ailments. While research continues to look at the safety and effectiveness of alternative treatments, some practices have shown promise in the treatment of bone cancer.
Nutritional Therapy and Herbal Medicine
Nutritional therapy with supplements, vitamins, and herbal medicine treatments may offer some benefit to people with cancer, including bone cancer.
A primary focus of dietary and supplemental therapy in treating cancer is bringing down inflammation. Some foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, have anti-inflammatory effects and are recommended for cancer patients. “Omega-3s are found in fish, particularly deep water fish, such as salmon, albacore tuna, herring, black cod, and mackerel,” says Donald Abrams, MD, a professor of clinical medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), who has an integrative oncology practice at UCSF’s Osher Center for Integrative Medicine.
Abrams also recommends that his patients season foods with garlic, onions, and turmeric, which are all thought to have anticancer benefits. Green tea may be helpful as well, says Abrams. “Green tea is very potent in polyphenols, which have cancer prevention effects,” says Abrams.
Mind-Body Medicine for Cancer
Mind-body medicine is another form of complementary and alternative medicine that has few to no adverse effects and may be helpful in the treatment of cancer. Mind-body medicine consists of therapies that involve the mind’s capacity to influence the body, and they includes such techniques as prayer, hypnotherapy, meditation, imagery and visualization, and music and art therapy. Since pain is the most common symptom of bone cancer, these mind-body techniques can be helpful in directing a patient’s attention away from their pain.
Another complementary and alternative medicine approach, known as energy medicine, is based on the energy fields that surround and permeate the body. This style of treatment includes such practices as Reiki and qigong.
Reiki practitioners believe that the body has an inner power that controls wellness. Practitioners try to access that power, with gentle touch, to bring about healing.
Qigong, which involves meditation and breathing, was shown in a small study involving people with different types of cancer to help control inflammation, when used with conventional medical treatment. This may be useful for bone cancer patients, who often experience pain and swelling in or near a bone.
Body Manipulation for Cancer
Another type of complementary treatment involves manipulation of the body, utilizing chiropractic techniques and osteopathic manipulation, a technique involving muscle and joint movement using gentle pressure, stretching, and resistance. The notion here is that, through manual adjustment of the body, ills can be alleviated. Massage therapy is another type of physical therapy commonly used to help treat cancer patients.
With bone cancer, caution should be taken with mechanical treatment, though, as fragile bones may be more prone to fracture or dislocation. Always talk to your doctor first before undergoing any body manipulation treatments.
Evidence That Complementary and Alternative Medicine Work
No type of complementary and alternative medicine has been proven, scientifically, to heal bone cancer. However, searches through databases of scientific papers show that scientists are very much interested in discovering whether alternative medicine can have a positive effect on bone cancers, other types of cancers, and side effects of treatments.
Proof of whether many of these therapies work is scarce, and most oncologists want proof before prescribing these treatments, says Abrams.
For now, most of the evidence in favor of complementary therapies for bone cancer has to do with relieving side effects of chemotherapy, such as nausea and vomiting. Acupuncture is one form of complementary and alternative medicine that may help reduce symptoms associated with traditional cancer treatments. There is also evidence that nutritional therapy may decrease inflammation and boost immune function.
Before starting any type of complementary or alternative medicine treatment, always consult with your medical team first to make sure it is safe and right for you.
