A sore throat is usually the first sign that you’re sick, causing that scratchy, uncomfortable feeling that makes it difficult to swallow. Also known as pharyngitis, a sore throat happens when the tissues of the pharynx (the part of the throat behind the mouth) become inflamed.

Most sore throats that accompany colds are caused by viruses and will resolve by themselves, says William Schaffner, MD, professor and chair of the department of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tenn.

Occasionally, a sore throat is caused by bacteria — a strep infection. “It is difficult to distinguish a strep infection clinically from a viral sore throat,” says Dr. Schaffner. If the sore throat is discomforting enough to take you to the doctor, a quick test can diagnose whether or not it’s strep. Since strep throat can sometimes lead to rheumatic fever, it’s important to get tested. If you test positive, antibiotics are typically prescribed to promote recovery and prevent spread of the strep bacteria to others. When a sore throat is part of common cold symptoms (including coughing, runny nose, etc.), it’s less likely to be strep throat.

Other Sore Throat Causes

Aside from cold viruses and bacterial infections, sore throats may also be caused by dry winter air, which irritates the throat. “Breathing only through the mouth also further dries and exacerbates the problem,” says Mark A. Moyad, MD, MPH, director of preventive and alternative medicine at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. Other sore throat culprits include allergies, which can cause inflammation and irritation, and certain viruses, including the flu. Dr. Moyad notes there’s even a type of virus that can cause blisters in the throat.

Treatments and Home Remedies for Sore Throats

Most sore throats will go away within a week or so. And, since viruses cause the majority of sore throats associated with colds, no effective medical therapy currently exists. Recommendations to ease sore throat pain are often the same as those used to treat cold symptoms: drink plenty of fluids and get plenty of rest. For extremely sore throats, drinking warm soup through a straw or sucking on ice chips may help.

A recent study from Pennsylvania State University found that about one to two teaspoons of honey before bed worked as well as the leading conventional cough medicine ingredient (dextromethorphan), says Moyad, noting that honey is soothing to the back of the throat and contains anti-microbial compounds similar to hydrogen peroxide. “I recommend honey before bed and warm salt water gargle (a half teaspoon of salt in one cup of warm water) during the day along with a vitamin C supplement,” he says. Because the acidity of regular vitamin C may cause stomach issues, taking a non-acidic vitamin C like Ester-C (500-1000 mg/day) may improve recovery time from colds, he continues.

Or try some of these other sore throat pain-relieving tips:

  • Use a humidifier.
  • Avoid smoke and other irritants.
  • Limit talking, which may lead to laryngitis.
  • Try a throat lozenge.
  • Drink lots of fluids.
  • Try ibuprofen or other pain relievers.
  • Suck on a frozen pop.

It’s time to focus on your own health. Here’s how to incorporate easy, everyday exercise moves into your busy schedule.

“It is recommended that people get in at least 20 minutes of physical activity a day,” says McGill, adding that there are many ways you can meet your fitness goals outside of the gym.

Your goal should be to get your heart elevated for at least 20 minutes each day— more if you want to see weight loss or improvements in your physical appearance. You can alternate between cardiovascular exercises, such as walking, jogging, cycling, and swimming, and resistance training. Even running around with your kids counts. “Moms have a lot of opportunities to be physically active because they have kids in their lives,” says McGill.

Here are some ways to incorporate a workout program into your everyday life:

  • Walk your kids to school. “Walk your kids to school or to the bus stop, and also walk back with them,” says McGill.
  • Make multiple trips. McGill recommends bringing in groceries from your car one bag at a time and taking one article of clothing from the laundry to your closet at a time — all these steps add up.
  • Cook meals from scratch. Preparing food takes more time and energy than putting something in the microwave for five minutes, says McGill. You add more activity to your day and everyone enjoys a healthier, fresher meal.
  • Head outdoors. McGill says that moms who go outside with their kids to play, rather than staying in while their kids play video games or watch television, will burn more calories.
  • Tote your tots. If your kids are small, opt to carry them rather than put them in a stroller to give yourself an extra workout.
  • Walk while you talk. Catch up on calls while your kids are at school, using your cell phone so that you can walk around your yard or up and down your street while you talk.
  • Do lunges and squats. Add repetitions of lunges and squats to your daily routine. For example, do walking lunges when you feed your dogs and do squats while you wait for them to eat. Or do 10 single-leg squats on each leg while you wait for water to boil on the stove.
  • Practice push-ups. Challenge your kids to a push-up contest. Try doing some push-ups with your elbows in to give your triceps an extra workout.
  • Do planks. Find a few times a day when you have a minute or so, and do a plank exercise, which is when you balance on your forearms and toes, with your body straight, to work your core. When your core, or center of your body, gets very weak and inactive, lower back pain can develop.
  • Skip stairs. If you have stairs in your house, take them two at a time, stopping to balance on one leg.

Let’s begin:

_ Follow U.S. guidelines for the minimum amount of exercise. That means exercising at a moderate intensity level for at least 2.5 hours spread over most days each week. At least twice a week, supplement aerobic exercise with weight-bearing activities that target all major muscles. Avoid inactivity; some exercise at any level of intensity is better than none while you’re building up your endurance.
_ Walking is the easiest way to get started. Get motivated by enlisting a friend to join you and adding variety to your routine. “Walking is simple and manageable for anyone,” says Jill Grimes, MD, a family physician in Austin, Texas. “Wear a pedometer from day one. Think of it in three parts: a five-minute warm-up of walking slowly, followed by a fast walk, then a five-minute cool-down of walking slowly.”
_ Compete only against yourself. No matter what activity you choose for getting fit, never compare your progress to someone else’s. “Do set goals, and if you are out of shape and hate exercise, start low and go slow,” recommends Dr. Grimes. “Do not compare yourself with your best friend who weighs 50 pounds less and just finished her 10th triathlon.” Pivarnik agrees: “Even if the same group of women walked at the same pace every morning, they would not all show the same fitness measures.”
_ Avoid overexertion. One preventive step Pivarnik suggests is checking your resting heart rate before getting out of bed every morning and making a chart so you can see a consistent, but gradual, decrease over time. If your resting heart rate begins to increase, you may be overdoing it. Another indicator of overexertion is muscle soreness that doesn’t go away after a couple days. “People generally err on the side of not pushing themselves enough,” says Pivarnik. “But the worst offenders are those who think they can jump in where they left off — the bunch of 40-year-old guys who think they are still on the high school football team and start running laps, but end up red in the face.”

As you work on improving your fitness, take it slow and steady to avoid injury or burnout. Above all, remember that consistency is key — if you keep at it, your hard work will pay off.

You’ve heard scary food allergy stories, and maybe this has even happened to you or someone you know: an innocent bite of a sandwich, casserole, soup, or salad is suddenly followed by shortness of breath, a rash, sweating, or some other sign of an anaphylactic reaction.

How do food allergies develop? Do they start only in childhood, or can you develop one later in life? What predisposes some people to food allergies?

According to the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN), a food allergy is the response of the immune system to a food that the body mistakenly believes is harmful. The body creates antibodies to that food, and the next time the allergic person eats the food, the immune system releases massive amounts of chemicals, including histamine, to protect the body. These chemicals trigger a cascade of allergic symptoms that can affect the respiratory system, the gastrointestinal tract, the skin, and the cardiovascular system.

How Food Allergies Develop
Allergy-related immunoglobulin E (IgE) is the antibody found in our blood and tissues that mediates allergy. Allergy sufferers have raised levels of IgE, which can be measured in the blood by various tests. Specific types of allergy tend to be related to age. Allergy to milk and egg whites is common among young children and it tends to subside naturally with time. Peanut and fish allergies tend to persist throughout life, and levels of specific peanut IgE remain high in people who are allergic to peanuts. (Allergies to tree and grass pollen, on the other hand, arise later in childhood and peak in early adolescence.)

Eight foods account for 90 percent of all food-allergic reactions, FAAN reports: milk, eggs, tree nuts (walnuts, cashews, etc.), peanuts, fish, shellfish, soy, and wheat. However, in children, the most common food allergens are peanuts, shrimp, and milk; about 6 percent of children have an allergy to tree nuts.

Allergic reactions to food, whether experienced by adults or children, can include itchy hives and vomiting as well as gasping for breath.

Who’s Allergic?
Bruce M. Penner, MD, an allergist and an associate clinical professor in the department of pediatrics at the University of California at San Diego, says a family history of asthma, hay fever, or atopic dermatitis increases the likelihood that a person will develop a food allergy.

“Children may develop a food allergy in infancy or the very first time they eat a certain food, but it’s more common that the reaction occurs after the second, third, or subsequent exposure,” Dr. Penner says. This is because initial exposure does not usually produce enough IgE to spark a noticeable or dangerous reaction. “And the full-blown reaction may need a few exposures of the food to become apparent.”

Full-blown reactions usually occur as a result of eating — and sometimes even touching or smelling — shellfish, fish, and tree nuts. An allergy to those foods, Penner says, can develop at any time in life, whereas allergies to milk, soy, corn, and eggs tend to develop in children who are 4 and younger.

Susan Kraus, a nutritionist in the Allergy & Immunology Center at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey, says one reason allergies to milk and corn occur in children so young is early exposure. “These are common things given to children,” she says. “Shrimp and lobster usually aren’t.”

Ayesha Siddiqi, MD, an allergist at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago, says that if an immediate family member has a food allergy, that can up the odds that a person will develop some type of food allergy. “If one child has food allergies, there is a 20 to 35 percent chance that their sibling will develop allergies. A parent with food allergies creates a 25 to 40 percent chance that an offspring will be allergic.” What if both parents have food allergies? Dr. Siddiqi says that such a situation raises the chance of allergies in an offspring to 40 to 60 percent.

Penner cautions genetics aren’t a conclusive link: “The truth is we do not know what combination of genetics and environmental exposure triggers food allergies.”

Jeff Zisselman’s Speech of Goal Setting

January 1, 2013, San Francisco, CA – Jeff Zisselman spoke on goal setting and getting focused with intentions for the new year.  In a meeting that took place in Millennium Tower, Jeff spoke with a group of people about the best way to set goals and to ensure they happen.  Some of the areas Jeff discussed are writing goals down and how much the success rate goes up when goals are written.  He also addressed the areas of life where he recommends goals should be set.  Physical Health, Spirituality, Social and Relationship, Financial health and Emotional health. Says Zisselman “Life is about balance. Many people set a goal in one or two areas and then find themselves not achieving the goal because they are out of balance and don’t have the energy to accomplish the goals they set.  The key is to set goals in all areas and keep them in front of you all the time.”
Zisselman adds “Also important is to begin any endeavor with the end in mind.  Get the picture in your mind and put that picture on a vision board.  The mind thinks in pictures so having vivid images to look at will help the unconscious mind work toward that goal and recognize opportunities that relate to attaining that goal.”

The two hour presentation had the goal of getting people focused on first, what they want and then how to go about setting the goals that will get them there in an effective manner.
